چکیده

The reflection-mode digital gradient sensing (rDGS) method is extended for visualizing and quantifying crack-tip deformations in solids under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. The r-DGS technique employs digital image correlation principles to quantify two orthogonal surface slopes simultaneously in specularly reflective solids by measuring small deflections of light rays. Here, for the first time, r-DGS is implemented to study both mode-I and mixed-mode (I/II) problems and evaluate fracture parameters. Under dynamic loading conditions, r-DGS is employed in conjunction with highspeed digital photography to map surface slopes in edge cracked plates subjected to one-point impact. The measured surface slopes are used to successfully evaluate instantaneous stress intensity factor histories by combining measurements with the corresponding asymptotic crack-tip fields and performing over-deterministic least-squares analyses. Finite element computations are also used to complement experimental measurements as needed.

Crack Tip Constraint for Anisotropic Sheet Metal Plate Subjected to Mode-I Fracture

On the ground of manufacturing, sheet metal parts play a key role as they cover about half of the production processes. Sheet metals are commonly obtained from rolling and forming processes which causes misalignment of micro structure resulting obvious anisotropic characteristics and micro cracks. Presence of micro cracks poses serious attention, when stresses at the tip reach to the critical v...

Dynamic Crack Growth Normal to an Interface in Bi-Layered Materials: An Experimental Study Using Digital Gradient Sensing Technique

The dynamic fracture behavior of layered architectures is experimentally studied. Specifically, crack penetration, trapping, and branching at an interface are examined. A newly introduced optical technique called Digital Gradient Sensing (DGS) that quantifies elasto-optic effects due to a non-uniform state of stress is extended to perform full-field measurements during the fracture event using ...

Finite Element Modeling of Crack Initiation Angle Under Mixed Mode (I/II) Fracture

Present study deals with the prediction of crack initiation angle for mixed mode (I/II) fracture using finite element techniques and J-Integral based approach. The FE code ANSYS is used to estimate the stress intensity factor numerically. The estimated values of SIF were incorporated into six different crack initiation angle criteria to predict the crack initiation angle. Single edge crack spec...

Optical mapping of crack tip deformations using the methods of transmission and reflection coherent gradient sensing: a study of crack tip <Emphasis Type="Italic">K </Emphasis>-dominance

A new full field optical technique 'Coherent Gradient Sensing' (CGS) is developed and used to study crack tip deformations in transparent as well as opaque solids. A first order diffraction analysis is provided for the technique and its feasibility is demonstrated both in transmission and reflection modes. Preliminary results from the dynamic crack growth experiment clearly demonstrate the capa...
